Founded in 1935 by Armand Petitjean, the fashion house Lancômetook its name from the French interpretation of a romantic castle. It seems apt too. Romance and fashion go hand in hand just about as well as romance and fragrance.
Lancômefocused on selling fragrances, lipsticks and other beauty products, setting up shop in Paris (Faubourg Saint-Honoré) and never looking back. Petitjean’s incredible nose for exotic aromas and blends was the competitive advantage for Lancôme to build their brand around, and the nose became so famous, Lancome opened a training school for aspiring perfumers and beauticians.
‘Conquête’ (or ‘conquest’ in English) was Lancôme’s first perfume, and it it quickly became the smell of Paris women. Other Lancome perfumes followed, incluing Cuir, LancômeBocage’, Tendre Nuits’ and Lancome Tropiques.
With all the success in Paris it was time to launch in the UK. Lancômeused the new Lancôme Magie – released in 1950 – as a platform to win the hearts of British Women. It worked too, the crystal bottle proving popular and selling rapidly.
Also popular is the modern Trésorand La Vie Est Belle ranges which features Trésor Eau de Parfum Lumineuse and Trésor Midnight Rose (advertised by Emma Watson) amongst others. Lancôme Miracle and Aroma are the other beauties in the collection.
