Fragrance is often said to help us discover our animalistic urges and instincts, so it’s no surprise a brand came along and used that notion in their brand name and marketing. Animale obliged, and immediately started using the tagline, ‘Unleash it!’ and painting their models in animal face paint.
Started in 1987 by Suzanne de Lyon, Animale has experienced a chequered history. Initially successful, the company went bankrupt in 1990 and was sold to Parlux, before finding new owners in 2004.
During the uncertainty, the Animale still managed to churn out fragrances that encapsulated the late 80s and early 90s vibe. The first, released in the brand’s first year of operation was self-titled and punchy in aroma.
Six years later, Animale encouraged men to ‘unleash it’ as well with Animale for Men which featured citrus, juniper berries and leather. Animale for Men is housed in a distinctive box with a prominent and iconic lightning bolt.
Further Animale perfumes include Animale Animale and Animale Animale for Men,
Instinct d'Animale, Chaleur d'Animale and Chaleur d'Animal pour Homme.
